So I'm working on trying to build a backup NAS for my office, and I'm thinking of using a hardware RAID5 card (3ware 9650SE-4LPML) coupled with OpenSolaris.

Any thoughts, Internets?

  1. I thought I'd follow up on this post in case somebody's Googling landed them here.

OpenSolaris does in fact support the RAID unit out of the box and detects it without muss or fuss.

I elected to go for an 8.x version of Ubuntu in the end, however, as I had problems with my motherboard controller drivers under OpenSolaris.

Provided a person is careful about which motherboard they select and know very clearly beforehand what they want their RAID unit to do (I needed mine to be hot-swappable and not have the operating system on the main RAID, all of which OpenSolaris can do), a body can't go wrong with OpenSolaris.
